Orleans Parish Jail Roster

The Orleans Parish inmate registry is a public resource that allows anyone to check who is currently held in the parish jail. OrleansParishCourt.org provides access to public information about current and recent inmates. Additionally, data can be obtained through the official website of the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office (OPSO), by visiting the facility in person, or by calling. The registry is maintained by OPSO, which is responsible for holding detainees in Orleans Parish, Louisiana. The sheriff's website's detainee search tool is regularly updated and reflects individuals in custody at the time of the request.

Search Current Inmates in Orleans Jail

There are several ways to find information about current inmates in Orleans Parish Jail.

Online Search

  1. Go to the Detainee Search page on the official OPSO website.
  2. Enter the detainee's last name or first name in the search field.
  3. Click the "Search" button — the system will display a list of individuals matching the criteria.
  4. Select the desired name from the results list — details will appear below.

You will need the person's full legal name for the search. If the booking number is known, it will speed up the process. The system works as a search field with result filtering.

You can also use OrleansParishCourt.org to search for public court information related to inmates.

Important: Information about juvenile offenders is not displayed in the public registry. Cases involving minors are handled separately by the Orleans Parish Juvenile Court, and access is restricted according to Louisiana law.

Find Orleans Jail Booking Records Online

A booking record is created at the moment a detainee is officially registered in the jail. It is the first document that records the fact of being held in custody.

During the booking process, the following information is generated:

  • Unique booking number
  • Date and time of registration
  • Charges presented
  • Name of the arresting agency (e.g., New Orleans Police Department)
  • Basic identification details of the detainee

The fastest way to find booking records online is to use the OPSO detainee search tool. It shows data of individuals currently in custody. If the person has already been released, the record may not be available through this tool.

To obtain archived booking records, submit a public records request directly to the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office. The OPSO official website has a section for submitting such requests (Public Record Request). According to the Louisiana Public Records Law, arrest and booking records are generally public, although some data may be restricted if the case is under investigation.

If the detainee has been transferred to a state-level facility, the search can continue through the Louisiana Department of Public Safety & Corrections offender information system.

Search the Orleans Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number

The OPSO detainee search tool supports two main methods.

Search by Last Name

Enter the last name in the appropriate field. Adding the first name narrows the results — this is useful if the last name is common. The system will display all detainees whose data matches the entered text.

Practical tips:

  • Check the spelling — even one mistake can hinder the search
  • Try different spelling variations if the name has alternative forms
  • If the system supports partial matches, enter only the first few letters of the last name

Search by Booking Number

This method provides an exact result. The booking number is a unique identifier assigned to each detainee upon registration. It is usually communicated to relatives during the first contact with the jail.

If the Search Yields No Results

The absence of results does not always mean the person is not detained. Possible reasons:

  • The person has not yet completed registration (booking can take several hours)
  • The person has already been released or transferred to another facility
  • The name was entered incorrectly or recorded differently in the system

In such cases, call OPSO directly or check the Jail Population Snapshot dashboard, which tracks individuals in the sheriff's custody.

Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in Orleans

The OPSO detainee registry is updated regularly throughout the day, but not instantly. There may be a few hours between the time of physical detention and the appearance of the record in the online system — the time needed to complete the booking process, fingerprinting, and data entry.

Main limitations to be aware of:

LimitationExplanation
Delay in record appearanceA new record may appear 2–8 hours after arrest
Disappearance after releaseAfter release or transfer, the record disappears from the public registry
Only current inmatesThe registry only reflects those currently in custody, not an archive of all past bookings
Data errorsSometimes there are errors in name spelling or charge classification

The registry is a snapshot of the current state, not a complete historical database. To obtain archival data, an official public records request must be submitted to OPSO. State-level criminal history checks can be ordered through Louisiana State Police Internet Background Checks.

Also, keep in mind: if a person was detained by a federal agency, their data will not appear in the parish registry. Federal detainees should be searched through the Federal Bureau of Prisons system.
